Urgency

The current traffic situation in the Netherlands is in a critical state. Traffic jams are very frequent and regularly reach a daily length of 200 - 300 kilometers in total. Also in the air there is congestion: airplanes entering Schiphol airport have to circle because of congestion. And the rail network is stretched to its limits.

All these problems increase with economic growth. The expectation is that by 2025 the time spent in traffic jams will double. The number of air passengers passing Mainport Schiphol will also double, though currently there is a slight dip. Especially the development of (eastern) EU countries and the open sky treaty with America cause this large rise in air passengers. The expectation is that 25 new airports will have to be build within the EU.

Apart from the continuing and realistic threat of a total block of the transportation system, there is also the problem that with mobility come many harmful emissions.
Causing loss of health, global warming and depreciation of the natural landscape.
The only viable solution to counter all these problems at once, is the introduction of Maglev transportation.

Many opportunities abound in this country, and could well play a key role in the upholding of the national economic growth. But the latest development is that the Dutch economic growth is falling back, though not so hard as in surrounding countries. It can be argued that with current fuel prices transportation has to become much more efficient, and Maglev is the only viable option to greatly enhance and rejuvenate the current logistic chains. From this viewpoint one could state that introduction of Maglev transportation is of vital importance for all high developed countries to maintain a sound economic future.

Projects

The first project for passenger transportation that must be structurally upgraded is the Schiphol or so-called SAAL trajectory. Mainport Schiphol is at the center of the newest economic activity in the country. It needs a fast and efficient connection with growing city centers in the North, like Almere and Lelystad.

The best project for container transportation is a trajectory through the Rotterdam area, the so-called Rijnmond.
